Amend Bill 25 so it Truly Strengthens the Public's Right to Know! 

At the end of April 2006 the BC Liberal government introduced Bill 25 and claimed that it “...will strengthen B.C.'s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act” and “address recommendations of the Special Committee that reviewed the FOIPP Act.” The truth is Bill 25 does nothing to make the process of filing an FOI request easier, less costly or less time-consuming for requesters.

The Campaign for Open Government responded to Bill 25 with a detailed analysis, along with an analysis of all amendments to the FOIPP Act since 2001.

Shortly after Bill 25 was introduced the BC Legislature concluded its spring session without Bill 25 being passed into law. As the fall 2007 legislative session begins the Campaign for Open Government is calling on the BC Government to introduce amendments to Bill 25 that genuinely improve the FOI process in BC. In addition, the Campaign for Open Government joins with the David Loukadelis, BC’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, in calling on the BC Government to introduce amendments to the FOIPP Act that remedy the ongoing misuse of the section 13 policy advice exception.

Throughout the fall of 2007 the Campaign for Open Government will be working to achieve these legislative amendments to the FOIPP Act to ensure that citizens’ right to know is both respected by the BC Government and strengthened.
